What to include on a freelance invoice
A professional freelance invoice should include your full name or business name, your client's details, a unique invoice number, the services delivered with rates and quantities, any applicable taxes, the total due, your payment terms, and how you accept payment.
InvoiceFree pre-fills invoice numbers sequentially (INV-0001, INV-0002…) and includes fields for all required information. You can also add a purchase order number if your client requires one for accounts payable.
4 tips to get paid faster as a freelancer
Use short payment terms
Net 14 or "due on receipt" gets you paid faster than Net 30. Most clients will pay within your stated terms — just set them shorter.
Invoice the same day you deliver
Don't wait until end of month. Invoice as soon as the work is done while it's fresh in the client's mind. The delay between delivery and invoicing is the biggest cause of late payment.
Always include your payment details
Bank transfer info, PayPal address, or a payment link — make it impossible for the client to say they didn't know how to pay.
Send a friendly reminder before the due date
A quick "just checking in, invoice #INV-0042 is due on Friday" prevents awkward chasing later. Most late invoices are forgotten, not ignored.
InvoiceFree vs spreadsheet invoices
Many freelancers start with a Word document or Excel spreadsheet — and that works, until it doesn't. Manual templates break when you copy them, calculations go wrong, and version history becomes a mess. A dedicated invoice generator solves all of this.
With InvoiceFree, numbers calculate automatically, your invoice history is always searchable, clients are saved for reuse, and every PDF looks pixel-perfect. And unlike most alternatives, the free plan genuinely includes everything — no paid upsell to unlock PDF export or remove a watermark.
